South Carolina’s first retail cooperative grocery store opening April 15
March 29, 2016SPARTANBURG, SC – Opening to the public on April 15, the Hub City Co-op will be will be the first ever retail cooperative grocery store in South Carolina. A full-service retail grocery store located in the heart of Spartanburg, the market will promote local commerce, harvest and connectivity and will offer fresh, local produce and healthy grocery items within a community-owned and community-governed business venture. Currently there are more than 1,400 local owners and volunteers working to open the market’s doors in its historic 1940s building on Liberty Street.
McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture provided project planning, architectural and engineering design, coordination and bidding services for the renovation and additions to the former automotive dealership and tire service building. McMillan Pazdan Smith also provided full construction administration services through completion of the project and Interior Design services for interior material, finishes and color selection.
McMillan Pazdan Smith understands that a specific site may represent significant historic context to a community and a new design must appreciate the past while looking into the future. The renovations and additions to the historic service building enhance the character of the 8,000 SF, one-story structure and repurpose the building to serve the Co-op’s mission.
