South Carolina Attorney Provides Opportunity for Alabama Students to See “Selma” After Their Superintendent Banned Field Trip

February 2, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – When South Carolina attorney, Carl L. Solomon, learned that an Alabama superintendent cancelled a field trip for high school students to see “Selma”, he sprung into action to ensure the students would have access to see the movie which details the 1965 March for Voting Rights.

This Saturday, January 31, over 80 DeKalb County, Alabama teenagers and adults will join Solomon, for a private screening of  “Selma” at the Hollywood 10 Cinemas in Scottsboro, Alabama.  Many of the teenagers in attendance will be students from Collinsville High School, the school where the History Club was denied a planned field trip by the school’s superintendent, DeKalb County Schools Superintendent Hugh Taylor.

“I am a strong proponent of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s adage that ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere’, so when I read the story about Alabama students being treated unjustly, I immediately knew I had to take steps to help them,” said Carl L. Solomon.

Solomon, joined by three of his concerned friends, bought out the theater and organized a private screening to provide access for the Collinsville High School students and other interested DeKalb County area residents to have the opportunity to see the movie for free.

“Selma is a powerful movie that depicts an important part of our nation’s history and it specifically underscores the major impact of Alabama residents.  For a group of Alabama teenagers to be astute enough to desire to see the movie, I felt like it was my duty to breakdown every barrier for them to see it,” added Solomon.
