South Carolina Extends Voter Registration Deadline Due to Historic Storm

October 6, 2024

South Carolina citizens now have additional time to register to vote ahead of the 2024 General Election, following a court order extending the voter registration deadline to Monday, October 14. The extension comes in response to the widespread impact of Hurricane Helene, which forced the closure of several county voter registration offices for days. In Edgefield, Laurens, and McCormick counties, offices have yet to reopen.

This statewide deadline extension provides voters across all counties an additional eight days to ensure their registration is up to date ahead of the November election.

How to Register

There are several convenient ways to register to vote in South Carolina, and it only takes a few minutes:

  • Online: Visit scVOTES.gov and register by midnight on Monday, October 14. You will need a South Carolina driver’s license or DMV ID card.
  • Mail: Download a voter registration form from scVOTES.gov, complete it, and mail it to your county’s voter registration office. Forms must be postmarked by Monday, October 14.
  • In Person: Visit your county voter registration office before they close at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14.
  • Fax or Email: Submit your completed voter registration form to your county office by fax or as an email attachment. Forms must be received by midnight on October 14.

Already Registered?

Voters who have already registered are encouraged to double-check their registration status and update any necessary information. Visit scvotes.gov and click on “Check My Registration.”

For Laurens County residents, voter registration forms are available at the Laurens County Election Office, located at 105 Bolt Dr., Laurens, SC. Residents can also call the office at (864) 984-4431 for assistance.

Lynne West, Director of Voter Registration and Elections for Laurens County, emphasized the importance of acting early. “Your vote is your voice, and it’s crucial to make sure you’re registered well in advance. We encourage everyone to check their voter status and ensure all their information is up to date before the deadline,” said West.

As South Carolina continues to recover from Hurricane Helene, it is more important than ever to ensure your voice is heard. Make sure you are registered and ready for Election Day by registering by the extended October 14 deadline.
