South Carolina Federal unveils 2016 80th Anniversary Celebration

January 20, 2016

South Carolina Federal Credit Union, the oldest, locally-owned financial institution in the tri-county, is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2016. The year’s festivities will include member appreciation events at each of their 17 financial centers located in Charleston, Georgetown and Columbia, as well as community-wide celebrations in the fall.

A yearlong advertising campaign, 80 Pearls of Wisdom, will share some of the wit and wisdoms a company acquires over eight decades of serving its community. The insights will range from financial advice to how to navigate lowcountry waters, reiterating South Carolina Federal’s role as not only a financial expert, but a true local institution and neighbor.

The credit union was founded in 1936 as Charleston Navy Shipyard Federal Credit Union by 14 shipyard workers who each contributed $5 each, for a $70 beginning. By coming together, they formed a member-owned financial cooperative to provide services in the best interest of the membership. This is the model we maintain today to serve over 150,000 members.

“It is both a pleasure and privilege to serve our communities for 80 years,” said Scott Woods, President & CEO. “This is the place we choose to call home and we work daily to invest in the growth and success of not only our members and this credit union, but our region as a whole.”

Individuals are able to learn more about the campaign and events by visiting www.scfederal.org/80years. They are also invited to submit suggestions for inclusion in the 80 Pearls of Wisdom campaign via social media, @SCFederal, or by visiting a local financial center.
