South Carolina Introduces New License Plate Honoring Revolutionary War History

January 4, 2026

South Carolina motorists will soon see a new standard license plate rolling out across the state, commemorating the Palmetto State’s pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War.

Beginning in early 2026, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) will begin issuing a newly designed license plate that honors the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War. The design replaces the familiar blue “While I Breathe, I Hope” plate as part of the state’s required ten-year plate update cycle.

The new plate highlights South Carolina’s significant contributions to America’s fight for independence and features imagery inspired by the historic Moultrie Flag, along with the phrase “Where the Revolutionary War Was Won.” The design reflects key moments in the state’s Revolutionary War history, including the 1776 Battle of Fort Sullivan on Sullivan’s Island, where Patriot forces successfully defended Charleston Harbor.

State officials worked in collaboration with the South Carolina Revolutionary War Sestercentennial Commission to develop a design that not only modernizes the look of South Carolina’s standard license plate but also serves as a rolling reminder of the state’s historical legacy.

Unlike specialty or commemorative plates that often require additional fees or applications, the new Revolutionary War plate will be offered as one of South Carolina’s standard license plate options. There is no additional cost beyond regular vehicle registration fees for motorists who choose it.

How to Get the New Plate

South Carolina drivers do not need to take any special steps to obtain the new plate.

Motorists will receive the new Revolutionary War design in the following ways:

• When renewing a vehicle registration, drivers may be issued the new plate as part of the standard renewal process.
• New vehicle registrations and tag transfers will automatically have access to the new plate design.
• No special plate application or additional documentation is required.

Current “While I Breathe, I Hope” plates will remain valid until they reach the end of their normal service life. Drivers are not required to replace an existing plate immediately unless it is due for replacement under the state’s standard cycle.

Drivers who prefer the “In God We Trust” plate will continue to have that option available as an alternative standard design.

A Statewide Commemoration on the Road

Officials say the new license plate is part of a broader, statewide effort to recognize South Carolina’s role in the American Revolution as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. Educational initiatives, historical events, and community programs are planned across the state through the coming years as part of the commemoration.

With thousands of vehicles traveling South Carolina’s roads each day, the new license plate is expected to serve as a visible tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and history that helped shape the state and the nation.

For many drivers, the plate offers a simple way to honor South Carolina’s past — one mile at a time.
