February 9, 2026The South Carolina Philharmonic announced the appointment of two new community leaders and established contributors to the orchestra’s Board of Directors: Carol Addy and Hassan Anderson.

Hassan Anderson
Hassan Anderson is an American oboist, conductor, and teaching artist recognized for his artistry and dynamic presence on stage. In 2019, he was named the Yale School of Music Distinguished Teaching Artist of the Year. Anderson has performed with major ensembles including the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the American Ballet Theatre, among others. A passionate educator, Anderson currently serves at the University of South Carolina as Assistant Professor of Oboe and Coordinator of Teaching Artistry, where he trains the next generation of musicians and arts leaders. He is also the Co-Artistic Director of The East Coast Contemporary Ensemble (ecce).
“I’m honored to join the board of the South Carolina Philharmonic in Columbia, and to serve this community as a professor at the University of South Carolina with music still guiding my compass. I still remember the smell of stepping into my local symphony when I was growing up in Jacksonville, the hush before the first downbeat, the lacquered wood and velvet air, and those transcendent hours in the hall that lifted me clean out of myself. I will never forget them. And I will never forget how often I sped home, probably breaking the law, after a riveting concert at Jacoby Hall, the melodies following me like headlights, the night still ringing, my heart trying to get there first. It is an honor and a privilege to serve, and I look forward to giving my very best in support of the South Carolina Philharmonic.”
