South Carolina Ranked Fastest-Growing State in the Nation in 2025

March 11, 2026

South Carolina continues to draw new residents at a record pace, with the state ranking as the fastest-growing state in the United States in 2025.

According to an analysis published by Visual Capitalist using the latest estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, South Carolina recorded the highest population growth rate in the country, increasing by roughly 1.5 percent between July 2024 and July 2025.

The growth reflects a continuing migration trend toward Southern states as Americans relocate for job opportunities, lower taxes, and a more affordable cost of living.

Migration driving South Carolina’s growth

Much of South Carolina’s population increase is being fueled by people moving into the state from other parts of the country. Census estimates show tens of thousands of new residents relocating to the Palmetto State each year, particularly from higher-cost regions in the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast.

While larger states such as Texas and Florida added more residents in total numbers because of their size, South Carolina led the nation in percentage growth, meaning its population expanded faster than any other state.

Growth visible across the Upstate

The influx of new residents is particularly noticeable across the Upstate region. Communities throughout Greenville County and neighboring areas—including Simpsonville, Fountain Inn, and Laurens County—have experienced steady increases in housing development, new businesses, and infrastructure investment.

Local leaders say population growth brings both opportunities and challenges as communities work to support economic development while preserving the character and quality of life that attract new residents in the first place.

A broader shift toward the South

The new map published by Visual Capitalist highlights a broader demographic shift across the United States. In recent years, the South has accounted for a significant share of the nation’s population growth as individuals and families take advantage of remote work opportunities and seek lower costs of living.

For South Carolina, the continued influx of new residents reflects the state’s growing reputation as a destination for both businesses and families looking to relocate.
