South Carolina Shellfish Season Opens October 1
September 30, 2025The 2025–2026 season for recreational harvest of shellfish in South Carolina’s coastal waters officially opens tomorrow, Wednesday, October 1. Coastal residents and visitors alike can once again enjoy clamming and oystering along the Palmetto State’s shores.
Recreational harvesters are reminded to make sure their licenses are up to date, check local maps for approved harvesting areas, and familiarize themselves with state regulations before heading out. Protecting these valuable coastal resources ensures a healthy and sustainable fishery for years to come.
Daily limits are strictly enforced: no more than two bushels of oysters per person per day and a half bushel of clams per person per day. Harvesters are also required to “cull in place,” returning undersized shellfish and dead shells to the same reef. This practice helps preserve and replenish the habitat.
Another important step in protecting the future of South Carolina’s shellfish reefs is recycling. Residents are encouraged to bring their oyster shells to designated drop-off sites so they can be returned to the water and used to build new reefs.
As the season opens, officials urge harvesters to follow all guidelines and remember that shellfish may only be collected from approved waters. Responsible harvesting keeps the coast healthy—and the dinner table delicious.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources recommends planning trips around low tide for the best experience.
