South Carolina Water Utilities employees support local home repair initiative
March 30, 2026Volunteer Project in the Midlands Strengthens Community Safety and Access
A team of South Carolina Water Utilities (SCWU) employees recently volunteered during a two-day community service project in partnership with the nonprofit Home Works, completing important repairs and accessibility improvements at a home, just north of downtown Columbia.
The team focused on improving safe access upgrades to the home’s front and back porches. Volunteers removed and rebuilt an aging wheelchair ramp at the front of the home, constructed a cover over the front door landing, moved and installed a new set of stairs at the back porch, and installed a new toilet — helping ensure the home has reliable, properly functioning wastewater service in line with the essential water and sewer services SCWU provides every day. The team also replaced sections of subflooring and replaced the front door and its framing.
The work addressed structural issues that had made entry and exit from the home unsafe. With the repairs complete, the homeowner now has more reliable and secure access.
“Our employees care deeply about the communities we serve,” said Craig Sorensen, president of SCWU. “Partnering with Home Works gives our team the opportunity to go beyond our everyday service and help make a real difference for our neighbors right here in the Midlands.”
Home Works is a nonprofit organization focused on strengthening communities through home repair and volunteer service. The partnership with SCWU helped ensure the project could be completed efficiently and safely.
