Spartanburg BCycle Ride Share program celebrates 10 years during #NationalBikeMonth in May

Spartanburg BCycle, the southeast’s first bike share program, is celebrating ten years in May during National Bike Month. The Spartanburg BCycle program is owned and operated by Partners for Active Living (PAL).

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Spartanburg residents from young children to seasoned artists submitted artwork that has been installed on BCycle baskets that are located throughout Spartanburg’s urban area. Participants were asked to share what bicycling means to them. “PAL is thrilled to celebrate this 10th BCycle anniversary by showcasing artistic pieces by our community on our BCycles,” said Laura Ringo, Executive Director. “Many of the pieces reflect the significance of recreation and our environment.”

Over the last 10 years Spartanburg BCycle has resulted in 29,000 trips and 175,000 miles ridden.

Spartanburg BCycle is the only BCycle program in the US to offer all three types of bikes: docked, dockless and electric. In 2018, 11 solar powered dockless Dash bikes were added to the program in partnership with Spartanburg Community College, providing a more convenient option to drop off wherever you leave it.

The City of Spartanburg, Mary Black Foundation, JM Smith Foundation, VCOM Carolinas, Spartanburg Community College, and other partners were integral to supporting this initiative.

PAL continues to live up to their commitment to biking opportunities in the community with the 16th Annual Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Criterium, a professional cycling race through the streets of Downtown Spartanburg, scheduled to take place on August 20. And they’ll be celebrating one year of The Vic Bailey Subaru Bike Park this August, opened in the summer of 2020 along the Mary Black Rail Trail.
