Spartanburg Celebrates Arbor Day

November 23, 2011

SPARTANBURG, SC – November 23, 2011 – In celebration of Arbor Day, the community is invited to join Mayor Junie White and USC Upstate’s Arbor Day guest speaker, Dr. Michael Dirr for a tree dedication and Arbor Day celebration.

Rain or shine, the event takes place on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. at the Johnson College of Business and Economics.  A Chinese Fringe tree will be dedicated and planted on site.

Although nationally observed on the last Friday in April, Arbor Day traditionally falls on the first Friday of December in South Carolina because it’s the best time to locally plant trees.  Spartanburg takes pride in the fact that this is the 30th year it has been designated by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City.  A city must meet four standards of excellence in the area of tree management in order to quality for this designation.  Details can be found at www.arborday.org/programs/TreeCityStandards.cfm
