Spartanburg Community College’s Chapter of
Phi Theta Kappa Inducts 108 New Members

April 23, 2012

SPARTANBURG, SC – April 23, 2012 – Spartanburg Community College’s (SCC) Beta Sigma Psi (BSP) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an international honor society for two-year colleges, inducted 108 students during BSP’s 2012 induction ceremony at SCC on Friday, April 13. Recognized for their outstanding academic achievements, these students embody Phi Theta Kappa’s fundamental hallmarks – scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

We are very proud of these students and congratulate them on their accomplishments,” said SCC Interim President, Henry Giles. “It is an honor and a great opportunity to be a Phi Theta Kappa member. We look forward to seeing these students continue to excel in their academic studies, in the community and among their PTK peers in the state, nation and worldwide.”

Established in Missouri in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 2.5 million members and 1,250 chapters in the United States, U.S. territories, Canada and Germany. To receive a membership invitation, students are required to complete a minimum of 12 hours of associate degree course work and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Benefits of PTK membership include opportunities for individual growth and development through honor, leadership and service programs, as well as access to more than $37 million in college transfer scholarships to more than 700 senior institutions.

One SCC student who has experienced first hand how being a member of PTK can change your life is Randall Josh Wheeler, of Chesnee, S.C., who was the ceremony’s guest speaker. Wheeler was an inaugural inductee at last year’s ceremony and served as the vice president of the chartering chapter. Based on his PTK membership and community involvement, Wheeler was granted a substantial academic scholarship to attend Wofford College in the coming fall.

“The most rewarding experience that made me appreciate the greatness of Phi Theta Kappa came when I received my acceptance letter to Wofford College. The scholarship was the icing on the cake.”

At the ceremony, Wheeler charged the new members “to first and foremost, make sure you’re committed to the goals you are trying to achieve and do your absolute best. But also remember to enjoy your experience.” He added, “None of my academic accomplishments would have been possible without God and Phi Theta Kappa.”

“It takes serious commitment and determination for students, like Josh, who have full-time jobs while completing their degrees, yet still make time to participate in student organizations, to maintain a high grade point average,” said Dr. Berta Hopkins, SCC Science Department Chair. “They deserve this recognition for working so hard for this honor.”
