Spoleto Festival USA’s 2018 poster features painting by David Hockney

Festival General Director Nigel Redden revealed the 2018 Spoleto Festival USA poster, featuring the work of renowned British painter, David Hockney. Beginning May 11, the 2018 poster will be available for $35 at the Festival box office, located in the Charleston Gaillard Center (open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm), online at spoletousa.org, or by calling 843.579.3100.

The painting, Hither and Dither (2017, acrylic on canvas, 48 x 96″, hexagonal © David Hockney), received its first public showing at the Pace Gallery in New York as part of the exhibition David Hockney: Something New in Painting (and Photography) [and even Printing] that opened April 5, 2018, and is on view until May 12, 2018. “In addition to being a prolific painter, David has created a number of set and costume designs for opera houses worldwide,” says Redden. “This is the third time his work appears on Spoleto posters, and we are very thankful for his generosity.”

Hockney’s Poster for the 19th Festival was created for the 1976 Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. And in 1997, the Spoleto Festival USA poster featured Orfeo ed Euridice (1″ scale backdrop for Scene III, 1994, gouache on two pieces of foamcore, 19.5″ x 16.5″), which Hockey designed for Placido Domingo’s televised broadcast of Operalia, 1994.

Since 1977, Spoleto Festival USA’s posters have featured work by such artists as Jonathan Green, Charles Gaines, Chuck Close, Jasper Johns, Sol LeWitt, Henry Moore, Elizabeth Murray, Bridget Riley, and Alex Katz, among many others.
