Spring Valley Rotary Club awards scholarships

The Spring Valley Rotary Club recognized six outstanding local high school students with a $1500 scholarship at a recent club lunch meeting.
The scholarship recipients from Spring Valley High School are: Paige Ashworth who plans to attend Clemson University majoring in architecture; Maya Ingram, enrolling at the University of South Carolina majoring in biological sciences and Litzel Martinez-Garcia who will attend Columbia College as a speech pathology major. Recipients from Ridgeview High School are: Lahsen Grich who will attend the University of South Carolina majoring in nursing; Tajah Pinkard enrolling at Spelman College majoring in psychology and Dasya’ Young who will attend Furman University majoring in biology.
Selection is based on the student’s academics, extracurricular involvement, financial need and an interview. Awards were made by the club’s scholarship committee led by Rotarian Denise Barth. The club provides applications to high school guidance counselors in February and selections are made annually in April. Spring Valley Rotary has been awarding these scholarships for the past twenty-nine years with proceeds from the club’s annual pecan sale. The club provides six scholarships annually for local students as part of the club’s service to the community.
Founded in 1978, the Rotary Club of Spring Valley has 110 members dedicated to service above self. Rotary is the world’s oldest service organization (founded in 1905) and is one of the largest global humanitarian service organizations.
