State employees raise more than $218,000 for United Ways across South Carolina

The South Carolina State Employee Charitable Giving Campaign has concluded with more than $218,000 raised for United Ways across the state, and almost $150,000 of that will go to improve education, economic mobility and health for Midlands residents.
“Thank you to the government employees across our entire state for your dedication to improving South Carolina as a whole. For the employees in the Midlands, I applaud you for increasing our ability to ensure our local children are starting school ready to learn, for providing resources to help our neighbors become self-sufficient and allowing us to provide eye and dental care for those underinsured or uninsured,” said Sara Fawcett, President & CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “It was a pleasure to recognize your commitment to the Midlands community during this year’s annual Live United Awards.”
Some of the standouts for the campaign included the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Department of Insurance, the South Carolina Education Lottery Commission, the Human Affairs Commission and the Public Benefit Authority.
The DMV received the Live United State Community Champion award for raising nearly $30,000, an increase of more than 10%.
“I cannot be prouder of the DMV Team,” said Kevin Shwedo, South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Executive Director. “These public servants always reach deep to help their neighbors in need. They understand there is always someone in their community that needs and deserves their help.”
Thanks to generous state employees and others, United Way is leading the charge in improving quality of life in the Midlands by working to prevent homelessness, to provide affordable eye and dental care, and to prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn and graduate high school on time.
