Statewide Burning Ban Remains in Effect Across South Carolina

March 29, 2026

Residents across South Carolina remain under a statewide outdoor burning ban issued Friday by the South Carolina Forestry Commission, as dangerous fire conditions continue.

The State Forester’s Burning Ban went into effect Friday at 4 p.m. and prohibits all outdoor burning in every county. This includes yard debris burning, prescribed burns, campfires, bonfires, and other recreational fires in unincorporated areas.

Officials say the ban will remain in place until further notice.

There are limited exceptions. The ban does not apply to:

  • Fires used for cooking food
  • Fires contained within proper enclosures such as portable outdoor fireplaces, chimineas, or permanent fire pits constructed of noncombustible materials and compliant with state fire codes

According to the Forestry Commission, current weather conditions continue to create a heightened wildfire risk. Extremely low humidity levels—dropping below 20% in some areas—combined with dry vegetation and gusty winds have created an environment where fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly.

SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones said worsening drought conditions are adding to the concern. He also pointed to areas impacted by recent storms, including damage from Hurricane Helene and ice events, which have left behind additional debris that can fuel wildfires.

“These conditions make it possible for any fire that starts to burn intensely and move fast,” Jones said, emphasizing the importance of limiting ignition sources to protect both the public and firefighters.

Residents are urged to follow the ban and remain cautious until conditions improve.

For updates on the status of the burning ban, residents can visit the South Carolina Forestry Commission website at scfc.gov, follow the agency’s official social media channels, or check with local emergency management offices for the latest information.
