Superintendent’s update on CCSD reopening schools

October 7, 2015

CHARLESTON, SC — Charleston County School District reopened for the first full day of classroom instruction today since the weather impacted operations late last week. Superintendent Gerrita Postlewait issued the following statement to update parents and families about the status of operations and what they should expect over the next few days.

“We appreciate everyone who was able to get their children to school day. We know it is an inconvenience in some cases to wait through the traffic and we also know that there are some students and staff members that are still impacted by flooding and road closures. Our thoughts are with you.

“We urge those of you who cannot make it to school yet to contact your school. The people there will help you work out excused absences and make arrangements to make up your work.

“We do anticipate continued traffic delays and road closures in the days to come, especially on James and Johns Island. With this situation, far from ideal, we are still committed as always to making sure that everyone is safe while also preserving as much instructional time for as many students as possible.

“CCSD has established a hotline for families beginning tomorrow, Thursday, October 8, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. so that families can report concerns, ask questions, or report absences. The hotline number is 843-937-6366.

“We appreciate everyone’s continued patience as we work together to move through this difficult and challenging time for our community and get everyone back to school safely and on time.”

CCSD estimates that 93.2 percent of students and 94.1 percent of teachers were in attendance today across the county.
