Superintendent Molly Spearman to deliver the Governor’s School’s Convocation Address

HARTSVILLE, SC – The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce that Molly Spearman, the South Carolina State Superintendent of Education, will serve as the keynote speaker for GSSM’s Convocation Ceremony Thursday, September 10 at 2 p.m. at the DeLoach Center in Hartsville.

“The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics provides graduates with an innovative and personalized STEM-based education,” Spearman said. “The skills and content knowledge that these graduates are embodied with will provide them with the necessary tools to be successful in college, career and citizenship.”

Spearman attended Lander University where she graduated with a degree in Music Education. She went on to earn her Masters of Education Supervision from George Washington University and an Education Specialist degree from the University of South Carolina. For 18 years, she was a teacher in schools across South Carolina.

In 1993, Spearman was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives where she served four terms. She also served six years as the Deputy Superintendent of the South Carolina Department of Education and 10 years as the Executive Director of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.

“We are honored to have Molly Spearman join us as the keynote speaker for this year’s convocation,” Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president, said. “Her dedication to education and hard work will resonate with our students.”

During Convocation, academic letters will be awarded to GSSM seniors and a formal welcome will be extended to the class of 2017 which is comprised of 151 juniors.

GSSM is one of only 12 public, residential high schools in the country that caters to students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The school offers a college environment, research experiences and challenging academics.
