Take A Break – Being Social Makes You Smarter

I love reading about the latest studies connecting productivity at work with social awareness and this week I ran across a great article in the Harvard Business Review by Andy Zynga (A Social Brain is a Smarter Brian) reviewing a study by the University of Michigan that found social interactions were just as effective at building cognitive strength as brain games, or in other words, being social makes you smarter.

We knew breaks were great at relieving stress and building rapport with colleagues, but now we know they are a whole lot more valuable.  So take a note all you workaholics and nose-to-the-grindstone types:  stand up, walk away from your desk and enjoy a non-work related conversation for a few minutes every day.

While I am all about mental exercises to make you smarter, getting dressed this summer does not have to be one of them.  Use these basic pieces to pull together looks that are ‘no brainers’:

1.  Dresses.  If you want quick and easy this one-piece option is the way to go.  They also come in all shapes, sizes, colors and materials making the choices endless.  Use light fabrics and loose cuts this summer to stay cool and comfortable, but keep the colors rich and vibrant.  As a base layer to your outfit, you simply can’t go wrong with a dress, but they can be a little underwhelming if left on their own.

2.  Blazers.  Another great, versatile piece that can completely transform your outfit.  Take the dress for instance.  Sheath dresses are trendy and comfortable, but shapeless on their own.  By adding a blazer you immediately elevate the outfit and give it shape at the same time.  Nothing defines a waist better than a buttoned blazer.

3.  Chinos.  I think everyone has a pair of chinos in their closet, and if you don’t you need to get one.  They are very versatile and can be either dressy or casual depending on how you use them.  Create a quintessential summer casual look by pairing them with a polo and boat shoes, or make an office-ready summer look with oxfords, both shirt and shoes.

For the summer months keep the legs straight and the hems short.  Showing a bit of ankle is ok, and by itself makes your outfit summer-worthy.

4.  Jewelry.   Not everything has to be a statement piece to make an impact.  Sometimes delicate, smaller pieces are all you need.  Even guys can use this tip.  One necklace, or bracelet can be enough to pull everything together.

The next time you are looking in the mirror and something feels ‘missing’ or the outfit isn’t quite right, try adding a piece of jewelry before changing into something else.

Use these simple tips to make dressing this summer less of a brainteaser and outfits that are perfect to go from work to cocktails for some serious socialization.  Did I mention the article also says people who are social literally have bigger brains?
