Take advantage of back to school (energy) savings

July 28, 2014

MONCKS CORNER, SC – Getting children ready to go back to school can mean spending big bucks on school gear. Santee Cooper wants to help you keep a little extra green in your wallet, even while you’re shelling out for trendy backpacks and the coolest pair of shoes ever.

Let’s start with this weekend’s sales tax holiday, which takes place Friday, Aug. 1 through Sunday, Aug. 3. If you’re in the market for a new computer or printer, consider purchasing Energy Star qualified products. Once you bring your new computer home, activate the power management features to deliver a lifetime of energy savings.

You’ll also want to think about buying a power strip for your new computer, printer or other electronics. Many appliances and electronics use power when they are switched off and still plugged in, referred to as phantom power. Gaming systems, phone chargers, DVRs, countertop appliances and other electronics are eating up energy. A flip of the power strip when your electronics aren’t in use can save you money on your power bill. Turning out the lights when rushing to beat the first school bell is an energy saver, too.

To help teach your children to be as smart about energy use as they are about their ABCs and 123s, you and your children can work together complete Santee Cooper and EnergyEarth’s free, online home check-up at www.santeecooper.com/energyearth. The EnergyEarth online audit will guide you through a set of questions about your home’s energy use and make suggestions on ways you can decrease your energy use.
