Tapp’s Arts Center Celebrates its 2nd Anniversary with a 1920’s Prohibition Party

COLUMBIA, SC – November 8, 2013 – Tapp’s Arts Center, Columbia’s Center for Visual and Performing Arts, at 1644 Main Street, will celebrate its second anniversary and two full years of arts on Main Street, Friday, Nov. 8, from 7 – 11 p.m. at its 1920’s Prohibition Party, hosted by the non-profit Friends of Tapp’s Arts Center.
The event will feature a casino ambiance complete with blackjack tables, craps, and roulette. The mood will be set with cabaret dancers Richard Durlach and Breedlove along with Palmetto Swing Dance Association dancers. Jazz will fill the air with the musical styling of The Tony Lee Group. Guests are encouraged to celebrate the forgotten cocktail hour of the jazz age. Guys and dolls are invited to wear their best glamorous Prohibition costumes to celebrate. Hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine are included with the price of event ticket. The Fountain Room will host a Prohibition-era specialty drink cash bar, with spirits donated by Bourbon, Kristian Niemi’s new restaurant, and Piedmont Distillers.
Tapp’s Arts Center’s artists will also have their work on display and guests are encouraged to stroll through their studios and consider a purchase. In the main exhibition space, artist Susan Lenz’s “I Am Not Invisible” collection will hang. The work in this exhibit investigates the nature of memory, the tendency to forget over time, and the artist’s fervent hope to create art with a lasting impression. Collectively, the work uses everyday, found materials and explores the way people try to remember and attempt to be remembered.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been two years at Tapp’s,” says Brenda Schwarz, executive director of Tapp’s Arts Center. “We’re looking forward to celebrating two years of enhancing the vibrant arts scene on Columbia’s Main Street and pursuing our mission of invigorating the city with a rich culture while breathing creativity into our community. Tapp’s continues to grow and morph into what our studio artists and the community ask for, and we’re pleased to provide performance and exhibition space for so many artists in the region.”
Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per couple in advance and are available at Tapp’s Arts Center or online at www.brownpapertickets.com. Tickets will be $45 per person and $80 per couple at the door.
The event is hosted by Friends of the Tapp’s Arts Center, whose mission is to provide artistic and educational programming through the Tapp’s Arts Center, as well as community outreach.
