Team Richland One raises nearly $19,000 to fight breast cancer

Team Richland One raised $18,832 to fight breast cancer through the district’s participation in Prisma Health’s annual Walk for Life and Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon fundraiser.

This year district walkers and runners, faced with the challenge of a pandemic that cancelled Prisma Health’s annual in-person community event, relied on tenacity and creativity to raise money virtually and complete their individual walks and runs.

Some, including breast cancer survivors, made their treks walking on beaches, running in the mountains, riding pink bikes or gathering their families and friends in their local neighborhoods and parks. Some schools and departments even hosted on-campus Pink for Prisma socially-distanced walks and runs, and the district sponsored a Pink Out Day on October 30.

“Although Team Richland One was unable to walk and run together this year, we did not let that undermine our determination to care for the community and fight for a cure,” said Dr. Traci Young Cooper, who coordinated the district’s fundraising efforts. “Even in the midst of a global pandemic, Richland One remained committed to the tenants of our Strategic Plan’s core values of compassion, collaboration and safety.”

Nearly 30 schools and departments participated in this year’s fundraiser. The district extends its appreciation to all of its team captains, as well as our runners, walkers and contributors for supporting this important need in our community. Since 2010, Team Richland One has raised $408,510 for the Prisma Health Midlands Foundation to fight breast cancer and raise awareness.
