The Citadel to Begin Search for New Director of Athletics

CHARLESTON, SC − The Citadel will be seeking a replacement for Director of Athletics Larry Leckonby who has resigned to become director of athletics at Catawba College, in Salisbury, N.C.  Leckonby will begin work at Catawba on June 23.

Lt. Gen. John Rosa, president of The Citadel, praised Leckonby for his management of Citadel athletics during a period of growth and change.   “Larry has done an excellent job as our athletic director and has put our athletic programs on solid financial footing over the past six years,” Rosa said. “He has been an integral part of our senior team and I am grateful for his leadership of this very important segment of Citadel life.”

Leckonby was named director of athletics at The Citadel in July of 2008 after serving as Executive Senior Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Maryland.  While at The Citadel, Leckonby had responsibility for a staff of more than 90 people and earlier this year, oversaw the hiring of the Bulldogs’ head football coach Mike Houston.

The president will name a search committee to find Leckonby’s successor.

 The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at The Citadel is to develop, maintain, and continue to improve a well-rounded program of athletics geared to the aims and objectives of The Citadel, the Southern Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
