The City of Charleston is hosting a public engagement meeting on preliminary design ideas for the Johns Island Recreation Center

September 25, 2025

The City of Charleston will host a public engagement meeting to gather community feedback on preliminary design ideas for the future Johns Island Recreation Center. The meeting will take place on Monday, October 20, 2025, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the St. Johns High School cafeteria.

The session will begin with words from Mayor Cogswell and District 3 Councilmember Jim McBride, followed by a presentation from the project’s design team introducing the early site layout and floor plan concepts.

Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to visit breakout stations focused on:

  • Site considerations
  • Preliminary floor plan ideas
  • Recreation programming opportunities

Design team members and recreation staff will be available at each station to answer questions, share details, and listen to community input.

“Johns Island residents have a unique perspective on what this recreation center should be,” said Mayor William Cogswell. “This meeting is an important opportunity for the community to see the early design ideas and share feedback that will help guide the conversation moving forward.”
