June 6, 2011

SPARTANBURG, SC – May 26, 2011 – On Wednesday, The National Development Council (NDC)  awarded The City of Spartanburg an award in the category of creative financing for the C.C. Woodson Community Center, which used federal funds, state funds, locally donated funds, loans from partners, and new market tax credits to complete the project at a remarkably low cost to City of Spartanburg taxpayers.

The project was one of six finalists and the City was invited to attend the conference, which showcases the top economic and community development projects in the nation.  The category winners are uniquely judged and selected by their peers at NDC Academy.

Mitch Kennedy, Community Services Director for the City of Spartanburg states, This is a very special recognition for a very special project. It is great to see the impact the Center has had in such a short time. The City is so thankful for its major funding partners –  SunTrust Bank, Mary Black Foundation, and Spartanburg Housing Authority. We also would like recognize BMW Manufacturing Company and Coke Cola for their support, but this facility is really about the people of Spartanburg and the Community they represent.
