The Episcopal Diocese of SC Community Housing Development Organization building two new houses on Humphreys Court for moderate income families
January 9, 2011CHARLESTON, SC – January 7, 2010 – The Episcopal Diocese of SC Community Housing Development Organization’s (EDCHDO) has begun work on a project to build and sell five new houses on Humphreys Court in Elliottborough. Construction on the first two of these houses, which are modular in design, will continue next week. Each home is a two-story 1600 square foot building with three bedrooms and two bathrooms; the design is Charleston single style and conforms to the other homes in the area.
Targeted buyers for the first two homes will be those with a family income up to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). A qualifying family of four may have an annual household income of up to $49,700.
The trailers carrying the modular units will begin arriving on Wednesday, January 12th and will park on Line Street and Ashe Street behind Calvary Episcopal Church.
On Thursday, January 13th beginning at 7 AM a crane to be used to unload the trailers will be placed in the parking lot behind the Housing Authority’s units located at 133 -147 Line. The trailers will be unloaded by the crane and the modular units placed on their foundations which have been built on the Humphreys Court lots. It is anticipated that the erection of both houses will be complete by 6 PM on Thursday.
The mission of EDCHDO is to rehabilitate existing houses and build new ones in the Elliottborough, East Side, and North of the Crosstown Expressway neighborhoods of the City of Charleston to provide first time homebuyers with affordable home ownership opportunities. EDCHDO, a non-profit organization, acts as a developer within the City of Charleston’s Homeownership Initiative to provide first time homeownership opportunities in these neighborhoods. EDCHDO in the past has renovated and sold numerous homes on Porters Court, Bogard Street and Rose Lane.
