The Leon Levine Foundation awards $45,000 grant to Senior Resources to provide nutritional support and resources to vulnerable seniors

July 27, 2023

Senior Resources announces that The Leon Levine Foundation has awarded $45,000 in grant funding to provide nutritional support and resources that will enable seniors to age with dignity and remain healthy and independent in their homes. With seniors living longer and the lasting impact of the pandemic, there has been a significant increase in the support required to ensure the well-being, health, and independence of older adults. As the senior population continues to grow and face new challenges, the grant funding from the Leon Levine Foundation will enable Senior Resources to adapt and meet the changing needs of the community, while tackling social and food insecurities.

“As we continue to see more seniors in our community, it is our goal that older adults have every opportunity to age in place in their own homes with high-quality, healthy lifestyles.  The continued support of The Leon Levine Foundation enables in-home and community resources that make independence a reality for our elderly neighbors” says Andrew Boozer, Executive Director of Senior Resources.

Senior Resources is currently serving over 700 homebound and disabled clients through Meals on Wheels. This program not only provides daily meals but also serves as a wellness check and source of socialization for the clients. Additionally, transportation services are offered through the Senior Wheels program for medical appointments. For clients who are not homebound but still face social isolation, Senior Resources has four Wellness Centers where they can interact with others and receive a hot lunch, with transportation provided.

The grant from The Leon Levine Foundation will enable Senior Resources to continue providing these essential services and meet the ever-changing needs of the senior community. The goal is to help older adults age in place with active and independent lifestyles. The support from The Leon Levine Foundation plays a crucial role in securing that reality for our elderly neighbors. The Leon Levine Foundation has been a longstanding supporter of Senior Resources and the Midlands community; their contribution is greatly appreciated.

About Senior Resources

Senior Resources is a non-profit organization that coordinates services, provides resources, and encourages the personal choices that allow Columbia’s senior citizens to remain independent.  All activities, services, and programs of the agency are geared toward promoting independent living, with the goal of helping seniors remain in their homes as long as possible through the support of staff and volunteers and delaying or preventing institutionalization.

Since 1967, Senior Resources has served Columbia’s frail and elderly residents in three areas:

1) In-home services, including Meals on Wheels, home care, respite care, senior companion services, and case management;

2) Community-based services, including congregate meals, wellness centers, transportation, and physical fitness;

3) Volunteer services, including the Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs.

With local, state, and federal government funding, as well as contributions from United Way, personal donations, and fundraising activities, Senior Resources offers a variety of programs so that our clients can select the assistance they need to maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle. With the support of our staff and volunteers, our services touch the lives of more than 4,000 Midlands residents.
