The many media hats of Lieutenant Curtis Wilson

IF YOU ARE A FAN OF GAMECOCK BASKETBALL, especially if you have regularly attended University of South Carolina home games at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, you’ve no doubt heard the mellifluous voice of longtime sports announcer, radio DJ, and Richland County Sheriff’s Dept. (RCSD) public information officer Lieutenant Curtis Wilson.
A Brooklyn, New York native and graduate of both the New York School of Announcing and Speech and Columbia’s Benedict College where he earned degrees in broadcasting and mass communications, respectively; Wilson is a veteran soldier having served in the U.S. Army as a nuclear, biological, chemical warfare specialist.
Wilson joined the RCSD in 2010, and today serves as public information officer for – and more-often-than-not the voice and face of – the department on TV, radio, print media and in social media.
When he’s not facilitating RCSD press conferences or coordinating LIVE PD events, Wilson can usually be found back in the press box as the “mic man” at USC men’s and women’s basketball games, Carolina baseball, and – in a nice Midlands mix of Gamecocks and Tigers – as “the official voice” of Benedict College Tiger football and basketball.
Wilson is also the voice of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship series for SEC basketball and baseball games, and is the voice of Ridgeview High School Blazer Football.
That’s not all. Wilson is the afternoon on-air personality providing the “local flavor” on the D.L. Hughley show on “The Big DM” (officially WWDM) in Columbia. He is the Sat. afternoon personality for WJMZ–107.3 Jamz in Greenville, and he is a “fill-in DJ” for WJMZ on other days.
For years, Wilson has worked tirelessly as a volunteer for myriad non-profit organizations: Everything from working with Harvest Hope Food Bank to The James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation, The American Red Cross, Oliver Gospel Mission, The United Way, The Columbia Urban League and many others. He is the recipient of numerous public recognitions and awards, as well as law enforcement and related qualifications from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy, the S.C. Emergency Management Division, and the RCSD.
Wilson is married to the former Kecia Young. They have a son.
