The Nickelodeon Theater receives major gift in memory of Dr. Suzan Boyd

August 12, 2024

The Nickelodeon Theater is honored to announce a major donation from Ed Sellers in memory of his late wife, Dr. Suzan Boyd.

The $75,000 contribution comes at a crucial time as The Nick continues to navigate the challenges faced by movie theaters nationwide in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Boyd was an ardent supporter of The Nick and appreciated the importance of the theater to downtown Columbia and to the entire Midlands community.

“Ed and Suzan’s dedication to the arts and their belief in our mission is beautifully reflected in this donation,” said Sumner Bender, Executive Director of The Nick. “Suzan was an inspiration to all who knew her, and I am fortunate to be among them. We are incredibly appreciative of Ed’s support, which ensures we can continue to offer distinctive and high-quality film experiences to the Columbia community.”

“This donation will significantly bolster our efforts to adapt and thrive in the post-pandemic landscape,” said David Whiteman, President of the Nickelodeon Board. “It will enable us to continue offering diverse programming and maintaining our role as a cornerstone of the arts in downtown Columbia.”

The Nickelodeon Theater, founded in 1979, has long been a beacon for independent film and community events in the Midlands. We hope this generous contribution will inspire similar donations from local arts supporters, helping to create and maintain stability for South Carolina’s only nonprofit cinema. Encouraging community support is essential for us to continue our mission and ensure that the arts thrive in Columbia.
