The Secret to Street Style Chic Jeans
February 26, 2016By Brian Maynor
Most people love their jeans, and would literally wear them every day if possible, and if you’re a fan of street style blogs like me, the inspiration is endless on making that a reality.
However, sometimes it feels impossible to recreate the chic styles that look so effortless. You’re looking at the inspiration pictures and using all the same pieces, but for some reason you outfit never looks the same. Here are a few simple ways to tweak your pieces to capture that effortlessly chic and sophisticated look to rock your own street style:
1. The statement coat. Whether you’re rocking skinny jeans or relaxed-fit ones, a statement coat will immediately give them polish and an elevated air of sophistication. What many people tend to lose focus on are the additional accessories necessary to tie everything together. If you want to dress up your jeans and t-shirt with a statement coat you need to make sure your shoes, bag and jewelry are dressy as well.
2. The half-tuck. This style trick has been making the rounds forever, and actually works to help keep your waist defined and your body proportionally balanced. When we wear a chunky sweater, or shirt untucked, what tends to happen is that we create a long, boxy upper body with short legs. The half-tuck breaks up that line so we have a balanced upper body and the focal point at the waist. Another trick to break up the weight of this look is to cuff and roll up the sleeves so they are shorter than the sweater hem.
3. The tailored blazer. Pairing a blazer with jeans is nothing new, and a staple ‘dressed up casual’ go-to, but to keep it fresh and modern you want to look at complementing proportions. Since a tailored blazer will fit you impeccably and create a very clean, close line, you want to pair it with jeans that have a slightly wider leg. Slim jeans will compete with the fit of the jacket and make your overall look appear too small. You also want to add some excitement to this look with whimsical or colorful accessories.
4. Turtlenecks. These classic pieces fluctuate in popularity every, and are certainly not for everyone, but if you like the look they are the perfect way to dress up flared or higher-waist jeans. The fitted silhouette complements the wide-legged pants and the higher waist works to elongate your legs to compensate for the higher neckline. Just don’t forget that again the accessories will work to either pull this look towards a more elegant style or a casual one.
Jeans are a street style staple and sometimes it’s not the specific pieces that make the outfit, but how they are pulled together and styled. The next time you find your look doesn’t quite match that of your inspiration look a little closer at the way they are styled and the accessories. Those details, more than the actual pieces, will make all the difference.
