July 20, 2012SPARTANBURG, SC – July 21, 2012 – The Spartanburg County Foundation has earned a spot on two of three prestigious Community Foundation Top 100 Lists that were released last month.
There are more than 700 community foundations in the United States; of these, The Spartanburg County Foundation is on the list of Most Gifts Per Capita at number 57 and Most Active Grantmakers at number 81 nationwide.
In 2011, the Foundation and its donors awarded more than 1,600 grants to nonprofit organizations that serve Spartanburg County, totaling over $7.9 million in financial assistance that was given to meet community needs. Additionally, approximately 3,600 contributions were made to the Foundation in 2011, for a total of approximately $9.8 million in gifts.
The rankings that the Foundation has earned demonstrates both the generosity of Spartanburg County citizens and the dollars that are being put to work in our community as compared to other communities throughout the United States, said John Dargan, President and CEO of the Foundation. We live in a very generous community when it comes to philanthropy. As a neutral party, the Foundation is able to partner with individuals and corporations to fulfill their philanthropic goals and meet our county’s ever-changing needs.
In the 2012 CF Insights publication, Benchmarking Beyond Asset Size, the report identifies the Most Active Grantmakers by distribution rates, Most Gifts Per Capita, and Most Activity Volume ranked on total gift and grant transactions.
Benchmarking is very important. Many times, organizations compare themselves based upon asset size. With this report, we are being benchmarked alongside community foundations of all asset sizes. The Foundation is very pleased to have earned a spot on two of the three top 100 lists, said Dargan.
CF Insights compiles and distributes data and information on finances, operations and best practices for community foundations nationwide. CF Insights was created by FSG, which consults foundations on how to accelerate their social impact, and the national association Council on Foundations.
Since 1943, The Spartanburg County Foundation has worked diligently to improve the lives of all Spartanburg County residents. The Foundation serves as a catalyzing force in bringing people and resources together to create long-term solutions to the County’s most pressing needs.
