The Walker Foundation Receives $4,000 Grant From The Dollar General Literacy Foundation To Support Youth Literacy

November 16, 2014

SPARTANBURG, SC –Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded The Walker Foundation, the fundraising arm of the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind a $4,000 grant to support youth literacy.

“We are very appreciative to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for their support of our school,” said Ann Akerman, CEO of The Walker Foundation. “Their generosity will help to maximize success for the students that attend our school and widen their available resources. We are very grateful for their compassion and provision” Akerman continued.

“Youth literacy grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation make a distinct impact on the communities we serve by supporting programs that improve education and enhance literacy,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of Serving Others and it’s exciting to see the real difference literacy and learning make in people’s lives.”

An award from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation will allow The Walker Foundation to purchase a collection of more than 150 books for the SCSDB library and implement a Book Club for our elementary students.  Materials purchased will include multiple print and braille copies of current and past award winning titles.  These books will be available for students to checkout and read at home or in their dormitories.  Students can read the books independently or with assistance, meet weekly to discuss the material being read and have refreshments.

Awarded at the beginning of the academic year, youth literacy grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation help provide teachers, schools and organizations with the funding and resources they need to properly begin the school year. This fall, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded nearly $4 million to approximately 825 schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations to enhance and support youth literacy and education across the United States.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education since its inception in 1993. In the past 21 years, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $97 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 5.8 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

About The Walker Foundation

The Walker Foundation was established more than 34 years ago as a nonprofit organization for the sole purpose of raising public funds to help support the programs and services of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB). It is the only school in the state that is specialized for students who are deaf and/or blind. The main campus is located in Spartanburg, but the school serves students throughout the state with its campus outreach programs. The Walker Foundation works to secure resources to help support the programs and services provided by SCSDB. Through education, we seek to build understanding, acceptance, and support for children with a vision and/or hearing impairment.
