The Weekend Recharge
November 6, 2015By Brian Maynor
With a rainy, dreary week it’s nice to look forward to the weekend when you don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn or leave the house if you don’t want to. Weekends are all about relaxing and recharging.
So what do you do to rejuvenate? For many of us the idea of enjoying a hobby has long faded into distant memory after succumbing to the pressure of all the ‘work’ we have to cram into our time off, but it’s time to change that.
Check out these favorite hobbies that actually will help you do more than unwind and relax:
1. Creating art. When our mind runs wild causing stress and anxiety, one of the best ways to calm it is by making art. No matter what medium you choose, the act of creating is the important piece, which is great news for everyone who isn’t a master artist, sculptor or pottery maker. If a blank canvas is too intimidating, fall back on a childhood favorite and pick up a coloring book. You’ll be amazed how quickly your stress and anxiety melt away.
2. Being a task-oriented person, I love to bake when I’m feeling down. Having precise steps and measurements keeps my mind occupied so I don’t dwell on negative thoughts and the end result is not only delicious, but my confidence is restored because I’ve taken a project from start to finish.
3. While many of us see this as a chore rather than a hobby, there is no denying exercise is a great way to problem solve. The movement, blood flow and endorphins all help your brain work out solutions while your body is getting a work out too. It only takes thirty minutes, which really isn’t that much of a commitment.
4. Knitting and Quilting. Would it surprise you to know that research has found knitters have a higher cognitive function and a greater sense of happiness than non-knitters? Not only are they intricate activities, they are community activities as well. So if you’re feeling isolate or starved for some light conversation, check out a local crafting group. It’s not just for ladies and you make some new friends along with your quilt or scarf.
The whole point of rest and relaxing is to detach your mind from work and all of its issues, but an added bonus is that by doing so you often can find solutions to those very same problems. So whether it’s art, sports or playing with your kids enjoying some leisure activities is better for your body and your psyche than vegging on the sofa watching TV all weekend.
