Thousands of K-5 students to attend interactive educational concerts in February

COLUMBIA, SC – More than 6,000 K-5 students from more than 100 schools are scheduled to participate in Link Up educational concerts with the South Carolina Philharmonic at the Koger Center Feb. 10-11, 2015.
Link Up, an innovative educational program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, will impact more than 6,000 Midlands young people, seniors, and individuals with special needs this year. K-5 participants began late this past summer to explore rhythm in music, as well as how composers use rhythm to move melodies. Each student is learning music basics and how to play the recorder – and, as a celebration of their months of study, will apply what they have learned in an interactive “The Orchestra Rocks!” concert. Students will sing and play the recorder or violin along with the S.C. Phil, led by Music Director Morihiko Nakahara and featuring host Kendrick Marrion and other musical guests.
The concerts take place at 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. Feb. 10-11, 2015 at the Koger Center for the Arts. General admission seating for $10 remains available for the 11:15 a.m. performance on Tuesday, Feb. 10 only. Purchase tickets through S.C. Philharmonic Audience Services by calling 803.254.PHIL (7445). Discounts are available for public, private, and home school groups.
A $15,000 grant from the Nord Family Foundation enabled the S.C. Phil to provide schools with invaluable curriculum resources based on the National Standards of Music Education and Common Core state standards, as students, seniors, and individuals with special needs are engaged with an entertaining and educational concert.
During the 2014/2015 season, Link Up concerts will be shared with 70 partner orchestras from Alaska to Florida, as well as in Canada, Spain, and Japan. This is the S.C. Philharmonic’s fourth year being chosen for the program.
