Three Dreher High School Class of 2017 graduates are among the 64 South Carolina students who have been named as winners of the highly prestigious National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities across the nation.

About 3,200 winners nationwide were announced on June 7 by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Richland One congratulates Dreher graduates Isabel G. Cook, Gregory J. Voelkel, and Nicolas B. Webster on their selection as National Merit Scholarship winners.

Isabel Cook, who plans to seek a career in the legal profession, was awarded her scholarship by the University of South Carolina. Gregory Voelkel’s college plans include pursuing a degree in writing. He was awarded his scholarship by Northwestern University.  Nicolas Webster plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering; he was awarded his scholarship from Boston University. In addition to being National Merit Scholars, all three students are 2017 Richland One Academic All-Stars and High School Scholars, programs which honor seniors throughout the district for academic excellence.

Colleges and universities select scholarship winners from among the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program finalists who plan to attend their institutions. The awards provide $500 to $2,500 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. Other winners will be announced in July.
