Achievement comes after four of the system’s hospitals earned ‘A’ grades for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group

In an outstanding achievement, three Roper St. Francis Healthcare hospitals — Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital — have been named Top General Hospitals by The Leapfrog Group, one of the most respected healthcare quality rating organizations in the nation.

Announced Tuesday, Dec. 17, this recognition is one of the highest honors that American hospitals can receive, reflecting an exceptional commitment to quality and patient safety. The three Roper St. Francis Healthcare hospitals are the only facilities in the Charleston region to receive the Top General Hospital honor; only one other hospital in South Carolina received the award. Only 36 hospitals nationwide received the Top General Hospital Award.

The accolade marks the fourth consecutive year in which Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital has been recognized as a Top Hospital, underscoring Roper St. Francis Healthcare’s unwavering focus on protecting patients from preventable harm and ensuring safe, top-tier care across its facilities.

“Our hospitals stand out because our teammates stand out. They are committed to providing top-quality and safe care while living our mission of healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence,” President and CEO Joseph DeLeon said. “This Top General Hospital recognition from The Leapfrog Group wouldn’t have been possible without our talented team. We thank each teammate for their diligent work, and we extend our gratitude to the community for trusting us to care for them.”

The Top Hospital designation from The Leapfrog Group is awarded only to hospitals that meet the highest standards in healthcare quality and safety, making this a highly selective honor. This recognition comes on the heels of an “A” Hospital Safety Grade awarded to all four Roper St. Francis Healthcare acute care facilities for the fourth consecutive period, further affirming the healthcare system’s commitment to excellence. The Leapfrog Group issues grades twice annually.

“The Top Hospital Award is another testament to the best-in-class care offered by Roper St. Francis Healthcare,” DeLeon continued. “Exceptional, safe patient care is the focus of all we do. We are proud to be leaders in South Carolina and beyond for exceeding quality standards.”

This year, only 134 hospitals across the nation received a Top Hospital Award, including 36 Top General Hospitals, eight Top Children’s Hospitals, 15 Top Rural Hospitals and 75 Top Teaching Hospitals. The recognition underscores a systemwide focus on quality and patient safety across critical measures like infection rates, medication safety and surgical standards.
