While the second installment in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy will come out next week, #TIEDTOGETHER is not the latest marketing campaign.

The Business of Fashion launched the campaign earlier this week, along with designers around the world, to “make a clear statement in support of solidarity, human unity and inclusiveness amidst growing uncertainty and a dangerous narrative peddling division” by wearing a white bandana.

Fashion is a visual medium and visual statements often resonate the loudest, so this is an impactful way of making a statement without ever saying a word.  The goal is clear:  BOF is asking everyone to wear a white bandana this month as a sign that you support and believe in the bonds of humankind – regardless of race, sexuality, gender or religion.

Whether you choose to wear one on your wrist, neck, head, bag or any other way does not matter.  What does matter is that you wear one, share it on social media and acknowledge others you see sporting one.

We discuss the two sides of image every week; the one that focuses on us and how our emotions and self-esteem are directly linked to how we feel about ourselves, and the one that deals with perception and how our image impacts what others think about us.  I try very hard never to push my views on anyone, social; religious; political or otherwise, but I feel this campaign transcends us as individuals, and everything that entails.

If you’re still searching for a gift to give your Valentine next week, a white bandana would be a great place to start.  It’s an inexpensive, thoughtful, and poignant token that you love them not only for the individual they are, but also as a fellow human being.
