Starting Up Medical Devices- Design, Development, Prototyping

FLORENCE, SC – Moving medical device companies to market from the first steps through design, prototyping and development will be the focus of a daylong workshop April 9, in Florence.

Participating companies will be eligible for up to $10,000 in professional services if they are selected for a new Quick Start program through the South Carolina Biotechnology Industry Organization. SCBIO is a trade organization representing companies that innovate pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

“Quick Start allows SCBIO to select promising companies for professional services to jump them ahead to investors, “ said Wayne Roper, SCBIO President. The program is funded through the SC Commerce Office of Innovation. “A prospective applicant does not have to attend the workshop, it is encouraged, so they can see what is ahead.”

The program is 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9 at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing & Technology (SiMT), 1951 Pisgah Road, Florence on the campus of Darlington-Florence Tech. Registration is at SCBIO.org/events. Lunch is included.

Researchers, physicians, students and entrepreneurs will get hands-on instruction in small group workshops on starting and growing a medical device company at the $50 million SiMT.

“We were blown away by their capabilities and expertise,” said Steve Johnson, CEO of CreatiVasc. “We saw immediately that it far exceeded the capabilities of any supplier we had discovered anywhere, including Boston and the Midwest.”

CreatiVasc, a Greenville-based startup developing an arterial port system for dialysis patients has since moved its design and development work to SiMT. Johnson will lead the overview of starting a medical device company.

The workshop sessions include:

  • Keeping your Sanity or remembering where you lost it
  • Design and utility patents, corporate organization and accounting rules
  • Regulatory pathways, marketing and reimbursement
  • Engineering, designing and prototyping
  • Fundraising and pitching
