Top Southeastern Puppeteers Converge for Family-Friendly Matinee at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College on May 11
April 18, 2013COLUMBIA, SC – April 18, 2013 – What happens when puppet-makers think way, way outside the box? Families with children of all ages will be delighted by a whimsical matinee performance filled with artful, inventive puppetry at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 2 p.m.
Selected for their enthralling stories and beautiful craftsmanship, renowned puppeteers from around the Southeast will converge for one afternoon to perform a special kids’ program on the Harbison Theatre stage.
The engaging, interactive show will be produced by Kimi Maeda and Lyon Hill of Belle et Bête in Columbia, S.C., the co-founders of the Spork in Hand Puppet Slam at the Indie Grits Festival. Visiting artists will include Madison J. Cripps, Valerie Meiss, Lisa Sturz and Keith Shubert of Asheville, N.C., and Tarish Pipkins of Chapel Hill, N.C.
Most of my children’s work deals with themes of acceptance for those who are different, says Keith Shubert, one of the visiting puppeteers from Toybox Theatre in Asheville. Often times, the central characters go on a magical quest of transformation and adventure. I like surprises, quirky timing and randomness. What is to be expected is the unexpected, with a healthy dose of colorful novelty and absurd humor!
Audiences can expect a fun, light-hearted afternoon of entertainment for the whole family. Tickets for the Southeast Family Puppet Slam are $10 and can be purchased at http://www.harbisontheatre.org.
Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College is committed to presenting high-quality arts experiences for learners of all ages, says Katie Fox, Director of Theatre Operations. By introducing our audience to innovative puppeteers we challenge them to view the art form in a new and curious way.
The 27,000-square-foot, 400-seat Harbison Theatre was founded in 2010 and serves the greater Columbia area from its location on the Midlands Technical College Harbison Campus in Irmo, S.C. The theatre’s technical specifications are some of the most robust in the state.
Harbison Theatre’s inaugural 2012 – 2013 season, featuring Signature and Family Series performances programmed in-house, has seen sold-out engagements with Pilobolus Dance Theatre, comedian James Gregory, The South Carolina Philharmonic and more.
