Traditions and Honor: Mauldin High School NJROTC Celebrates Annual Military Ball

March 11, 2026

The Mauldin High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) followed a time-honored naval tradition recently as cadets, faculty, and families gathered for the unit’s annual Military Ball. The event, which serves as the social highlight of the academic year for the program, took place on Saturday, March 7, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Greenville Golf Resort and Conference Center.

The evening was a formal display of military etiquette and naval heritage, providing cadets with a practical application of the leadership and social skills taught in the classroom.

A Night of Ceremony and Celebration

The ball commenced with the traditional posting of the colors and a series of ceremonial events that define the military social experience. Cadets, dressed in their service dress blues, participated in the following customs:

  • The Grand March: Led by the senior cadet staff and their dates, the march signified the formal opening of the evening’s festivities.

  • The POW/MIA Table: A poignant ceremony featuring a small table set for one, left empty to honor service members who are prisoners of war or missing in action.

  • The Toasts: Following standard naval protocol, cadets and guests offered formal toasts to the President of the United States, the United States Navy, and the NJROTC program.

  • The Cutting of the Cake: Using a ceremonial sword, the youngest and oldest cadets present typically share the first slice of cake, symbolizing the passing of experience and tradition from one generation to the next.

Recognizing Leadership and Service

Beyond the dancing and dinner, the Military Ball served as a platform to recognize the hard work of the unit throughout the spring semester. Commanders from the Mauldin High School program noted that the event is a reward for the cadets’ dedication to drill competitions, community service projects, and academic excellence.

For many seniors, the night was a final formal milestone before graduation. Several cadets in attendance have already received appointments to service academies or have enlisted in various branches of the military, making the evening a significant transition point in their young careers.

Community Support and Participation

The event saw attendance from the school’s administration and local veterans’ organizations, who continue to support the program’s mission of developing citizens of character. The Mauldin High School NJROTC remains one of the largest and most active student organizations in the Greenville County School District, frequently appearing in local parades and color guard ceremonies.

Following the formal program, cadets spent the remainder of the evening on the dance floor, celebrating the camaraderie built through their shared experiences in the unit.
