TWLUM Teens Project Hosts ‘Save Our Youth’ Workshop, Highlighting Decade of Impact
November 28, 2025GEORGETOWN, S.C. — The Tyron Wilson Let Us Mentor (TWLUM) Teens Project recently held a successful “Save Our Youth Workshop,” bringing together community partners to address critical issues facing local at-risk adolescents.
Tyron Wilson, founder and executive director of the organization, extended “heartfelt thanks” to the Tidelands Health Georgetown Family YMCA for hosting the event, which delivered powerful sessions on gun violence, vaping, substance use, and bullying.
Focus on Key Issues
The workshop featured a dedicated group of community speakers and partners, whose knowledge, support, and dedication created a powerful experience for the young participants.
With a core focus centered on essential life skills and awareness, several local community leaders provided vital information to both youth and parents.
- Georgetown County Drug and Alcohol Commission: Raphael Carr and Ms. Sicleana McCall addressed substance use and vaping.
- Georgetown County Mental Health: Ms. Keisha Black provided support and resources for emotional well-being.
- Georgetown County Sheriff’s Department: Ms. Tiffany Kinloch discussed gun violence prevention.
- Crisis Rape Center: Ms. Sharon Beaty spoke on important safety and awareness topics.
TWLUM also thanked the parents who attended, acknowledging that their “continued support means everything,” Wilson added.
Nearly a Decade of Mentorship
The TWLUM Teens Project is currently serving 25 youth ages 10 to 18 in rural Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties. The organization is nearing its decade-long anniversary, having served the area for nine and a half years with a mission to improve the well-being of at-risk young people through technology, educational experiences, mentorship, and positive outings.
The project works to help youth succeed academically, socially, and personally through a variety of programs:
- Academic Support: Provides free math tutoring every Monday at Carver’s Bay Middle and High Schools to strengthen skills and build confidence.
- Enrichment: Offers free swim lessons at the YMCA, along with College, Career & Life Exposure through tours, career trips, and educational adventures.
- Access: Ensures equal opportunity by providing transportation to all participants for all activities.
Future Goals
While the organization continues to provide essential services, the TWLUM Teens Project is committed to restarting its after-school program, which was previously discontinued due to funding challenges. The goal is to relaunch the program to meet four times a week, providing consistent academic and enrichment support to its youth.
In addition, the TWLUM Teens Project is holding a Community Yard Sale Fundraiser on Saturday, December 13 in Hemingway. Individuals, organizations and businesses can rent a table to sell items, with the rental proceeds benefiting TWLUM.
