Two deans appointed at Clemson University

CLEMSON, SC – May 3, 2011 – Two interim deans at Clemson University have had the “interim” removed from their titles, Provost Doris Helms announced Tuesday.

Richard E. “Rick” Goodstein, who has been interim dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities since June 2010, has been appointed to the position on a permanent basis after a national search. Goodstein was one of four finalists who interviewed for the position.

Thomas R. “Tom” Scott has been interim dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences since July 2009. His appointment as dean follows a vote of confidence in his leadership by the faculty of the college.

“Both Dr. Goodstein and Dr. Scott are distinguished scholars and outstanding administrators, and they both have served the university admirably in many capacities,” Helms said. “We are fortunate to have them in these important leadership positions.”

Goodstein came to Clemson in 1982 to work with the university’s performance bands. He was completing his 12th year as chairman of the performing arts department when he agreed to serve as interim dean last year.

Goodstein received a Ph.D. with emphasis in music education and conducting from Arizona State University. He has a master’s degree from Arizona State and a bachelor’s from Miami University of Ohio, both in music education.

“I am honored to have been selected as the next dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities,” Goodstein said. “The college is truly a unique blend of disciplines, and we have an incredible group of students, faculty and staff. I am excited to help the college reach its full potential.

Scott arrived at Clemson in 1986 after completing his post-doctoral research in immunology at Mississippi State University. He is a professor of animal and veterinary sciences with a joint appointment to the biological sciences department. He served for four years as director of the former School of Animal, Biomedical and Biological Sciences and has an active research program.

Scott earned his bachelor’s degree in zoology and a master’s degree in poultry science from Louisiana State University and received his Ph.D. in poultry science from the University of Georgia.

“I am proud to have this opportunity to serve as dean and I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and students of the college,” Scott said. “My interim appointment has allowed me the opportunity to learn so much more about the important teaching, research and service conducted by our faculty members. Our college is committed to the land-grant mission of Clemson University.”

Clemson’s College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities has 10 academic departments: architecture, communication studies, construction science and management, English, history, languages, performing arts, philosophy and religion, planning and landscape architecture, and visual arts.

The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences comprises four departments — animal and veterinary sciences; biological sciences; food, nutrition and packaging sciences; and genetics and biochemistry — and the School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences.
