Two South Carolina school leaders receive top honors

Chesterfield County School District’s Superintendent, Dr. J. Harrison Goodwin, has been named the 2019 South Carolina Superintendent of the Year, and Richland School District Two’s Chief Instructional Officer, Mrs. Nancy Gregory, has been named District Level Administrator of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA).

“The Board of Trustees would like to Congratulate Dr. Goodwin on this award and special recognition,” said Chesterfield County School District Board Chair Wesley Miles. “He has done a tremendous job for CCSD for his entire tenure as Superintendent. The Board of Trustees are aware of the hard work he has done for CCSD and feel a sense of pride in having him leading our school district.”

He will compete for the 2019 National Superintendent of the Year award sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), First Student, and VALIC.

Elizabeth “Beth” A. Phibbs, Executive Director of SCASA, states, “Dr. Goodwin is well respected in his community and among his colleagues. He is passionate about eliminating barriers that prevent children from getting the best education possible and that passion has fueled his work in Chesterfield County. We are delighted that he has been chosen for this honor.”

Finalist for the award were Dr. Ron Garner, Spartanburg School District One. Candidates participated in an application and interview process conducted by a team of South Carolina business, education, and community leaders.

Mrs. Nancy Gregory, Chief Instructional Officer of Richland School District Two, was named the outstanding District Level Administrator of the Year by SCASA. Gregory has been an advocate for education policy in the state and most recently served as the chair of the Palmetto’s Finest Committee.

Elizabeth “Beth” A. Phibbs, Executive Director of SCASA, states, “Nancy Gregory is a well-respected educator in our state and is a tireless advocate for public education. As Chief Instructional Officer in Richland School District Two, Mrs. Gregory has demonstrated that she is a visionary in transforming both student and teacher learning, engagement and achievement. We are delighted that she has been chosen for this honor.”

This award is recognition from other outstanding leaders for the Premier job she is doing to ensure every student in Richland ​Two has a chance to purse their passions, realize their purpose, and fulfill their promise.”

Goodwin & Gregory will be recognized throughout the year for their accomplishments. Moseley Architects supports both awards by providing a scholarship to each winner to be used to assist a student or teacher with professional development or college courses.

SCASA is the professional organization for school leaders in South Carolina, with a membership of more than 4,100. From leadership development opportunities and research, to publications and legislative advocacy, SCASA’s focus is to support school leaders in providing the best possible education for South Carolina’s young people. As a state affiliate of three national associations for school leaders, SCASA also works on the national level.
