United Community Bank Executive Elected to National RMA Board of Directors

BLAIRSVILLE, GA –  Lynn Harton, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of United Community Banks, Inc., and President and Chief Operating Officer of the company’s subsidiary bank, United Community Bank, is among the financial industry’s top executives appointed to the Board of Directors for the national Risk Management Association.

“After serving on the RMA’s special councils over the past several years, I am honored to become part of the Board of Directors that will help guide the organization,” Harton said. “The RMA is invaluable to the financial industry and to be asked to help carry out its mission is a privilege I am proud to accept.”

The RMA is a professional association established to advance the use of sound risk principles in the financial services industry. RMA’s Board, councils and committees act as consultants, judges, recruiters, reviewers and advisors in support of that mission. The RMA helps members use sound risk principles to improve institutional performance and financial stability, and enhance the risk competency of individuals through information, education, peer sharing, and networking.

Harton is a past member of the RMA National Community Bank Council and RMA National Credit Risk Council.

Harton has more than 30 years of experience in the banking industry, with expertise in commercial banking, risk management, and turnarounds and change management. Harton is responsible for directing overall operations for United Community Bank and working alongside other members of senior management regarding the strategic direction and expansion of the $7.4 billion holding company.

Prior to joining United Community Banks in 2012, Harton was a Consultant and Special Assistant to the CEO and Executive Vice President of Commercial Banking for TD Bank Financial Group in Greenville, S.C. Prior to joining TD Bank, Harton held the positions of President and CEO, Head of Commercial Banking and Head of Credit and Risk at The South Financial Group (which was sold to TD Bank). He also has held various executive positions at Regions Financial Corporation, Union Planters Corporation and BB&T.

Harton earned his bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and has participated in various executive programs at Duke University, Wharton, Columbia, Northwestern, University of North Carolina and University of South Carolina. In addition to the RMA, Harton has served on a number of additional financial boards and committees throughout his career, including the Palmetto Business Forum, CBA National Small Business Banking Committee and the Equifax Small Business Financial Exchange.

Harton lives in Greenville, S.C., with his wife, Flavia, and serves on a number of community boards, including The Greenville County Museum Association and The Peace Center for the Performing Arts.
