United Community Bank Ice on Main rink installation to begin next week
November 5, 2018The chiller that helps keep the ice frozen throughout the United Community Bank Ice on Main season is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, November 6 at 9 a.m. The equipment will be set in place by crane and installation of the rink is expected to be underway by 10 a.m. Crews will hook hoses up to the chiller and flood the rink with water for the remainder of the week. It takes 4,000 gallons of water to flood the 3,200-square-foot rink and a 200-ton air cooled refrigeration unit is used to make ice. Once the ice rink is installed, sunlight, ambient temperature, humidity and wind play key roles in maintaining skateable conditions.
To facilitate the installation, the section of Main Street between Court Street and Broad Street will be closed from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6.
City officials and sponsors will kick off the United Community Bank Ice on Main skating season on Friday, November 16 at 4 p.m. The opening ceremony will feature entertainment, announcements about the season and the ceremonial first skate. The rink will officially open to the public at 4:30 p.m.
United Community Bank Ice on Main is located between the Courtyard Marriott and City Hall on the Village Green. The season will run through Monday, January 21. Admission is $10 per adult, $8 per child (ages 4-12) and free for children under the age of 3, and includes skate rental. For more details, visit www.IceOnMain.com.
