United Way honors Betty & Walter Montgomery with annual Morgan Award

United Way of the Piedmont announced this year’s recipient(s) of the Morgan Award, Betty and Walter Montgomery.
The Morgan Award is given to a United Way leadership donor who exemplifies a caring spirit for our community. Betty and Walter Montgomery have been longtime supporters of United Way and the Spartanburg community, serving on numerous nonprofit and foundation boards as well as being advocates for the local textile industry. The couple was one of the first to become a member of United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society, United Way’s highest level of leadership giving.
George Todd, chair of the Alexis de Tocqueville Advisory Board, presented the award to the Montgomerys at United Way of the Piedmont’s 31st Annual General Daniel Morgan and Alexis de Tocqueville Leadership Societies Reception. This year, the reception was held on November 15th at the new Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts at Wofford College. “The Montgomerys have brought Spartanburg to where it is today,” said Todd.
Paige Stephenson, United Way of the Piedmont President & CEO, said, “It is so fitting for Betty and Walter to receive this year’s Morgan Award as Walter’s father, Walter Montgomery Sr., won the first ever Morgan Award just over 30 years ago. We are so thrilled to be able to honor the legacy of the Montgomery family and the impact they have had in this community.”
