United Way of Greenville County expands emergency support for federal employees with 0% loan access

March 24, 2026

As the federal government shutdown continues to impact essential workers, United Way of Greenville County is taking action to support federal employees at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP).

More than 120 federal employees at GSP, including Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents, are currently working without full pay. The most recent paycheck was $0, following a partial payment the period before. As financial strain increases, many workers are struggling to cover basic needs such as housing, food and transportation. While community resources exist, many forms of assistance are experiencing weeks-long delays due to high demand.

In response, United Way of Greenville County has partnered with Self-Help Federal Credit Union to launch United for Federal Employees, a rapid response initiative providing immediate relief.

Through this partnership, all impacted federal employees at GSP can access 0% emergency loans, regardless of credit union membership status. United Way is covering the interest typically required for non-members, ensuring fast, barrier-free access to funds. Self-Help Federal Credit Union will also provide on-site support at the airport.

The Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District is also supporting workers through a food and personal essentials drive, with donations distributed through an on-site resource center serving federal employees affected by this current government shutdown and their families. Donations of household goods and non-perishable food items are being collected daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the airport’s Information Center and valet parking kiosk.

“This is about speed and access,” said Meghan Barp, President and CEO of United Way of Greenville County. “When people are working without pay, waiting weeks for support isn’t an option.”

United Way of Greenville County continues to serve as a connector and rapid responder, ensuring support is available when it’s needed most.
