United Way of the Midlands announces plans to open new headquarters

COLUMBIA, SC – United Way of the Midlands announced plans to move to a new location in downtown Columbia beginning March 2016 with the purchase and renovation of 1818 Blanding Street.
With an overall budget of $4.2 million, the new headquarters will be paid for with the proceeds from the sale of the Main Street location to the City of Columbia, along with the generous support of local companies, foundations and individuals.
Funding for this facility will not divert any money from United Way’s Community Impact work, grants or program spending.
“When we began this process, we assessed the organization’s current and future needs and sought out the most cost effective way to meet them,” said Mac Bennett, President and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “Our new facility will allow us to improve the work environment for our employees and volunteers, remain in the downtown community and create an appealing meeting facility for our business and nonprofit partners.”
The new location will provide more than 6,000 square feet of meeting space, allowing the organization to build upon the 6,000 guests it currently welcomes annually for meeting and events.
“United Way is a community hub and has always opened its doors for collaboration,” said Doug Stone, Scout Executive and CEO of Indian Waters Council, Boy Scouts of America. “Many partner agencies make use of United Way’s facilities and this building will be an asset for those organizations and the community at large moving forward.”
Project management for the new building will be led by LCK Construction Services, Mashburn Construction will serve as general contractor and adaptive reuse design by 1×1 Design, Inc.
