United Way of the Midlands requests volunteer data for federal disaster funding

October 25, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – United Way of the Midlands is asking for the community’s help in collecting volunteer-service data on behalf of Richland County and City of Columbia to help secure a federal match to offset the cost of relief and recovery efforts.

As a federally declared a disaster area, state and local governments are able to request federal funds to help with relief and recovery costs. To demonstrate local resources used, volunteer hours will be submitted for consideration.

Volunteer information requested include hours served and type of project completed.

Organizations and individuals who have contributed volunteer time on behalf of any local agency or group to disaster relief efforts are encouraged to report their service to United Way.

“Reporting number of hours served is just another way volunteers and organizations can help our state during this recovery process,” said Mac Bennett, President and CEO of United Way of the Midlands. “The more volunteer hours we can report, the more federal support can we garner; alleviating some of the burden on state and local resources.”

United Way will not use this information to solicit donations or volunteers. Once collected, the data will be reported to the appropriate local and federal governments.
