USC School of Music announces new Music Teaching Artist Certificate Program

October 21, 2024

Thanks to the generous support of donors Fred and Dinah Gretsch, ten music teaching artists will be awarded a full scholarship to participate in the University of South Carolina School of Music’s new Music Teaching Artist Certificate Program as Program Fellows.

Beginning in January 2025, the certificate program will provide instruction and experiences to musicians who wish to support music learning for all students in South Carolina schools.

  • The new Music Teaching Artist Certificate Program, a three-year pilot project, acknowledges the current music teacher shortages facing South Carolina and a deficit in opportunities for some students to learn musical instruments.
  • The program also seeks to expand music learning opportunities that promote the heritage of South Carolina communities.
  • The program begins with a first cohort of ten music-teaching artists in January 2025 and concludes with teaching observation and demonstration in the spring/summer of 2025.
  • All ten first cohort Program Fellows will be awarded a full scholarship to participate in the program, including course work, mentoring, individual observation, and paid attendance at the South Carolina Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference.
  • Faculty include Music Educators Hassan Anderson, Gail Barnes, Mary Luehrsen, Amanda Schlegel and guest instructor Alice Hammel.
  • Applications will be accepted from October 24 through December 2, 2024. Scholarship recipients will be notified on December 16, 2024.
